Abstract

The central thrust of this study is to examine the approaches to security management by interrogating the orthodox and the African indigenous approaches to security management in Nigeria. The primary objective is to interrogate why the two approaches could not address astronomical increase of insecurity in the country as indexed by global peace record, thus departing from other previous studies that only focus on specific security management approches. Based on qualitative method, investigation was carried out, secondary source was adopted where data from notable internet articles, public and private libraries were carefully gathered. The qualitative data were analysed with content analysis where information sequence was used, data were extracted from numerous logical chains of evidence available in periodic of magazines, journals and conference papers as well as documentary materials; reports from peace and security committees, security agencies, and edited books etc. Human needs theory was applied. The study discovered among other things that modernization undermines the African indigenous approach. The study recommended blending the orthodox and the African indigenous approaches with collaborative, transparent people oriented policies and programmes to address insecurity in Nigeria.
